The reading level of your content determines who can understand it — and who will bounce away in frustration. Most successful online content is written at a 6th–8th grade reading level. That is not dumbing it down; it is writing clearly.
What Is Reading Level?
Reading level (or readability) measures how easy or difficult a text is to understand. It is typically expressed as a US school grade level. "8th grade reading level" means an average 8th grader (13–14 years old) could comfortably understand the text.
Common Readability Formulas
- Flesch Reading Ease: Scores from 0–100. Higher is easier. Aim for 60–70 for general audiences
- Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: Returns a US grade level. Aim for 6–8 for blogs
- Gunning Fog Index: Estimates the years of formal education needed. Under 12 is ideal
- Coleman-Liau Index: Based on characters per word rather than syllables

How to Improve Readability
- Use shorter sentences (under 20 words on average)
- Choose simpler words ("use" instead of "utilize," "help" instead of "facilitate")
- Break long paragraphs into shorter ones
- Use active voice ("The writer creates" not "The content is created by the writer")
- Eliminate jargon unless your audience expects it
